| Beautiful
colonial city, located in a archipelago region with
more than 100 islands, considered a National and World
Historical Monument, it preserves until today its countless
natural and architectural charms.
Explore on foot the historical Center of Paraty, free
of cars , and you will travel back in time, where walking
has to be done in a leisurely pace due to the irregular
rounded cobblestone pavement of its streets. The construction
of its old housing and churches reflect a certain style
of that time and the mysterious masonry symbols which
decorate its walls, lead our imagination back to the
old times of Brazil. The prohibition of motorized vehicles
in the Center certainly adds to this feeling of a "time
travel".
The village was founded in 1667 around the Church of
"Nossa Senhora dos Remedios", its patron saint.
Paraty (sometimes spelled "Parati") had a
significant economic importance due to its sugar cane
mills (it used to have over 250 distilleries), and the
name "paraty" was at a certain time synonym
of a very good sugar cane rum.
Paraty is considered, wrongfully, a city that can be
seen in one day. The unaware tourists think that its
attractions concentrate only in the Historical Center
with its preserved colonial architecture. This is, doubtlessly,
one of its great enchantments, but Paraty hides a natural
unmatchable beauty.
The Paraty Bay, with its still wild beaches and islands
is one of the most beautiful places in the Brazilian
coastline. Its clear and calm waters, full of colorful
fishes are an invitation for a good dive that you cannot
refuse. Doubtless, this is a tour that pleases everyone,
from all ages and styles. From big schooners to small
trawlboats, there are many options to enjoy Paraty.
Diving and fishing are common activities among the tourists.
After enjoying the intense sea, nothing is better than
visit the waterfalls which exist in the way to the mountain
ridge: Pedra Branca, Tobogã, Corisco and many
other spots where the river invites us for a refreshing
bath. In these courses it is possible to make a stop
at the ancient alembics to get to know the traditional
process of making and of course tasting the famous Brazilian
sugarcane drink, "the pinga."
PARATY BY NIGHT
After so many tours, evenings and nights are moments
to enjoy the Historical Center. Walk calmly through
all the small streets, observe each house with its colonial
architecture. "How many history these windows may
hide..."
Visit the historical buildings, such as the House of
Culture with its painting collection and the programme
of events and exhibitions.
Have fun in a street show or having your caricature
drawn; go in every shop and take some of the beauty
of Paraty through the local craftsmanship.
"Refuel" yourself in one of the good restaurants
of the city and enjoy some live music in one of the
bars.
Reserve night to watch the puppet show.
Paraty has became one important cultural and artistic
point, concentrating a great numbers of ateliers of
artists. Don't forget to see the different artistic
expressions that exist in the city.
Inform yourself if there is a traditional party in the
city. These events are very lively and generally have
food stand, shows with the local band Santa Cecilia
and of the "cirandeiros". The true cultural
expression still preserved that one can find in Paraty
is a rare opportunity to have fun and to know our roots
better.
Fill your eyes with beauty by visiting the permanent
bromeliaceae exhibition in the Flora Paraty (next to
the road junction).
