BRAZILIAN HISTORIC PARADISES
SALVADOR (Pelourinho district) AND RECIFE (Olinda)

The secular fusion of the black, white and Indian ethnic groups produced in Salvador an extremely rich and pluralistic cultural identity, with well preserved traditions expressed through popular manifestations and cults which are still present on the streets.

The first permanent European settlement in Pernambuco was at Olinda by Duarte Coelho Pereira, who had been granted the Pernambuco Captaincy. He founded the City of Olinda as Capital of Pernambuco in 1537. Just 4 miles from Recife, Olinda is noted for its 16th and 17th century ornate churches and for the colonial buildings. Also there is a colony of artists and there are several places with typical objects and gifts. Also it is a right place to find and taste different typical foods since there are very good restaurants and typical street fairs.
