Seat of the first capital and bishopric of Minas,

A baroque tour de force in Congonhas, the sculptures
of Aleijadinho which decorate the Sanctuary of Good
Jesus of Matozinhos express the passion and piety
of this great artist at the peak of his humanism
and creativity.
A ride from São João del Rei to Tiradentes
on the narrow gage train pulled by a nineteenth-century
steam locomotive rolls you back into a long lost
past and lets you in on some of the mysteries of
Minas Gerais.

one of the most alluring towns in Minas. Its shops
are inviting, the craftworks of the finest quality,
