| Attractions
of Jericoacoara
One of the most impressive attractions of Jericoacoara
is the night, due to the beauty of the sky. Since there
is no light on the streets, and the atmosphere is very
clear, the place is perfect for sky observation. If
you come in the full moon period, climb a dune, and
you will see a view that seems to be from another planet:
dunes "lit" by the moonlight, and a silver
shining sea, framed by the silhouette of the palm trees
along the coast. If the night is not in the full moon
period, even better: just look up, from any place away
from artificial illumination. You will see the most
starlit sky of your life. Shooting Stars cross the sky
at every instant, while communication satellites can
be seen with the naked eye. Have fun finding the constellations
of the Zodiac.
Besides the beauty of the sky, Jericoacoara also has
good nightlife. There are several bars, some opening
earlier, before the Forró (typical dance), and
others staying open till sunrise. The "Recanto
do Momento" forró is the most traditional
place of Jericoacoara's nightlife. It has existed since
the music used to come from the batteries of an old
army truck. The rule of the house was: the music goes
till the battery runs flat, and those still in the place
will have to push the old truck to make the engine start.
Stories from the time when there were no generators.
If you are the kind that likes to enjoy the nightlife
until sunrise, don't miss the Bakery of Mr. Antônio
Marques, an old fisherman that makes bread for some
lodges, and serves nice hot bread, straight from the
oven to your table, after 2:00am. He makes bread with
cheese, coconut, banana, cashew nuts, or honey.
But Jericoacoara isn't only beautiful sights: don't
leave without truly knowing the Village, the people
and it's rhythm. Talk with the fisherman, learn with
them how life can be simple. It is worth making a visit
to the Church, built in stone by the natives. The tower
of the church offers a splendid view of the Bay. Jericoacoara
also has some special attractions, that only happen
at certain times of the year: if you have the luck to
visit Jericoacoara between June 15th and July 30th,
don't miss the Sunset at the Arched Rock, because this
is the only time of the year that the sun fits right
into the arch. Another traditional date in Jericoacoara
is New Year's Eve. The place gets very busy at this
time of year, since a lot of people are attracted by
the good mood of beginning a new year in such a beautiful
place. Windsurfers also meet in Jericoacoara at the
end of the year for a traditional Windsurfing Festival.
