| Geographical
Position
Jericoacoara has a very special geographical position,
since it is the furthest north spot of the coast of
the state of Ceará, with sea to the east and
to the west side, being one of the few continental beaches
of Brazil where it is possible to see both sunrise and
sunset in the sea, as well as moonrise and moonset.
At sunset, it is already traditional to watch it from
a big sand dune on the west side of the village, called
Sunset Dune. Everyday, after the sunset, there is a
group of Capoeira fighters practicing their art at the
base of the dune (capoeira is a typical fight/dance,
created by the African people brought to South America
during slavery times).
Walking
further west, after the "sunset dune", we
find a very beautiful coconut farm, which is slowly
being covered by Moving Sand Dunes. For those who like
to walk, the west coast of Jericoacoara is excellent.
After 5 kms you will find Mangue Seco, a small village
with a small lake of fresh water. Continue walking west
along the beach, and you will reach Guriú, another
community of fishermen, by the mouth of a small river,
that marks the western limit of the EPA. At the Guriú
river, there is a raft crossing that is crossed daily
by several dune buggies going to Tatajuba Beach, which
is about 25 kms from Jericoacoara. Tatajuba is a primitive
fishing community, where tourism has not yet altered
the way of life of the people. It has huge sand dunes,
some in the process of crystallization, which stops
them from moving with the wind.
Walking,
is in fact, the best way of getting to know Jericoacoara:
you can get to places where no other vehicle can take
you, and you go at a perfect speed to appreciate the
landscape. Hiking you have a closer and better contact
with nature, because you won't have an engine to frighten
the birds and animals, and you won't have tires to cause
erosion. There are appropriate hikes for any fitness
level, and you can also rent the ideal companion for
your adventures: a GPS, an electronic navigation device
that guides you precisely, through satellite signals.
